Carcinogenic benzene emissions from Airport Link tunnel

Air toxics in north Brisbane are expected to increase dramatically. The Environmental Impact Statement (Air Quality Impact Assessment technical paper, table 14) for the Airport Link car tunnel notes the following air quality impacts for Kedron:

• 47% increase in butadiene emissions
• 47% increase in benzene emissions
• 47% increase in formaldehyde emissions
• 47% increase in xylene emissions

These chemicals are categorised as volatile organic compounds and may cause skin irritation and breathing difficulties, while long-term exposure may impair lung function. Compounds such as benzene are carcinogenic.

These additional fumes will be emitted by the traffic sitting in congestion on Gympie Road, Stafford Road and the East-West Arterial.

They will also be emitted from the exhaust chimneys located near to Royal Brisbane Hospital, next to Kedron State High School and in Alma Road (a residential street) at Eagle Junction.

It is a myth that building roads reduces pollution, and this is just one of many examples of how the public are being mislead by devious politicians and biased "scientific" consultants.
