Simple fix for Airport Roundabout
This week Warren Pitt (Roads Minister) announced a range of measures for the Airport Roundabout.
The road-based solutions to "easing" congestion on the Airport roundabout will not reduce traffic.
Traffic on the roundabout will grow steadily so long as government keeps putting more money into roads and effectively making the situation worse.
When the Airport Link tunnel is operational the roundabout will be an even bigger disaster.
These bone-headed roads ministers would probably vote for covering the whole of Brisbane in bitumen, which in their eyes would "solve" the problem.
Of course the solution to reducing unnecessary traffic on the roundabout is for government to invest some money into Airtrain and the city's rail and bus network.
This will increase patronage of Airtrain and reduce traffic on the road, which also reduces car accidents and pollution.
The decision by Premier Bligh to split the transport portfolio between two ministers was foolish because transport problems need to be addressed in an integrated manner considering the contribution each mode can make to addressing the strategy.
Another sensible option would be for the Brisbane Airport Corporation to stop building more and more car parks at the airport terminals, which effectively worsens the problem by creating more incentives for people to drive.
